Controlling Spatiotemporal Dynamics in Excitable Systems

چکیده
Spatially extended excitable systems exhibit a variety of spatiotemporal dynamics — from stable to chaotic. These dynamics can change under pathological conditions and impair normal functions. Thus being able to control the altered dynamics for improved functioning has potential for wide ranging applications in real and artificial systems. Here we propose a simple and general method that can be used to target the spatiotemporal dynamics, both globally and in spatially-localized regions, in either direction i.e. towards the stable (“control”) or unstable (“anti-control”) manifold by simply changing the sign of an externally applied perturbation or pinning. The method is applicable to both chaotic and non-chaotic systems, with discrete and continuous local dynamics, and for different topologies of interactions. We also apply it to simulate an experiment on epileptogenic neuronal activity in rat hippocampal tissue [1]. This unified approach for differential targeting of global and local dynamics promises to be useful for systems spanning large spatial scales and having structural and functional heterogeneity.

Controlling soliton explosions
We investigate the dynamics of solitons in generalized Klein-Gordon equations in the presence of nonlinear damping and spatiotemporal perturbations. We will present different mechanisms for soliton explosions. We show (both analytically and numerically) that some space-dependent perturbations or nonlinear damping can make the soliton internal mode unstable leading to soliton explosion. We will ...

Controlling spatiotemporal chaos in excitable media by applying low-amplitude perturbations locally is of immediate applicability, e.g., in treating ventricular fibrillation, a fatal disturbance in the normal rhythmic functioning of the heart. We look at a mechanism of control by the local application of a series of biphasic pulses, i.e., involving both positive and negative stimulation. This r...
متن کاملControlling spatiotemporal chaos in excitable media using an array of control points
The dynamics of activation waves in excitable media can give rise to spiral turbulence, the resulting spatiotemporal chaos being associated with empirical biological phenomena such as life-threatening disturbances in the natural rhythm of the heart. In this paper, we propose a spatially extended but non-global scheme using an array of control points for terminating such spatiotemporally chaotic...
متن کاملControlling spatiotemporal chaos and spiral turbulence in excitable media: A review
Excitable media are a generic class of models used to simulate a wide variety of natural systems including cardiac tissue. Propagation of excitation waves in this medium results in the formation of characteristic patterns such as rotating spiral waves. Instabilities in these structures may lead to spatiotemporal chaos through spiral turbulence, which has been linked to clinically diagnosed cond...

2 Abstract Recent advances in Kalman filtering to estimate system state and parameters in nonlinear systems has offered the potential to apply such approaches to spatiotemporal nonlinear systems. We here adapt the nonlinear method of unscented Kalman filtering to observe the state and estimate parameters in a computational spatiotemporal excitable system that serves as a model of cerebral corte...
